In his Junior year of High School, shortly after his 17th birthday in 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve Submarine Division at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME. Six months after graduation in December 1960 he reported to Submarine School in New London, CT for active duty. During his 28 year Naval Career he traveled world-wide to Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Azores, Gibraltar, Spain, France, Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Newfoundland, North Pole, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan. He also served as a Personal Yeoman COMSUBDEVGRU Two staff New London, CT; Recruiter-in-Charge Stockton, CA; Nuclear Detailer Bureau of Naval Personnel Staff Washington, DC; Force Training Coordinator COMSUBPAC staff, HI; and Admin Department Leading Chief SUBASE Kings Bay, GA. In 1985, he made the decision to decline advancement to Master Chief to avoid future assignments with long deployments and separation from his family. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1986 as a Senior Chief Yeoman (Submarines) and returned to St. Marys, GA to settle down and start a second career. After taking a year off to enjoy retired life, he became employed as a civil service employee at the Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, GA. After 15 years working at several different positions he decided to retire again in July of 2003 after completing 44 years of total service to the U.S. Navy. In his most recent position he served as the Military Relocation and Retired Affairs Program Manager at the Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, GA. In addition, he served as a member of the Secretary of the Navy Retiree Council for four years. He also actively served as Submarine Veterans WWII Georgia State Vice Commander; U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. National Chairman of the Veteran Affairs Counsel; Base Commander/President of the St. Marys Submarine Museum Board of Directors and Treasurer of the St. Marys Submarine Museum Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Navy Submarine League, Southeast Chapter. He met the love of his life, Madelyn Borja in 1980 while stationed aboard the USS GRAYBACK submarine home ported in Subic Bay, Philippines. She was a young Ship Repair Facility Apprentice at the Naval Shipyard who had come down to install new tile in the wardroom of the GRAYBACK. Four months later they got married and shortly after he brought her with him to Kings Bay, GA. In January of 1982 they were blessed with the birth of his loving son, Mark Alan Hurley.

He enjoyed outdoor activities such as golf, fishing, and riding around in his Antique 46 Plymouth Coupe and Touring Motorcycle with Mady. He and his wife Mady loved to play different golf courses at every opportunity, which was quite often. He would want to be remembered as a compassionate and understanding person, loyal and respectful to his friends and associates, and a person who could be depended upon to always put forth his best effort.

Survivors include his lovely wife Madelyn Hurley, son Mark Hurley, and grandchildren, Jacob Scott Hurley, Emily Jane Hurley, Addison Grace Hurley, Rylee Brooklyn Hurley, and Collin Christopher Hurley.
