Obituary

Parnell J. Crump, 88, passed away peacefully at home on July 3, 2026, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on September 20, 1937, in Blackshear, Georgia to Arvie J. Crump and Stella Mae Lowman Crump.

Parnell was raised on a farm in Blackshear, and moved to St. Mary's at the age of 16. He married Betty Eloise Lee of Patterson, Georgia in 1955. He is remembered by many as the owner/operator of Crump's Barber Shop, which he opened in 1961. Parnell lived a life defined by faith, hard work and devotion to those he loved. For decades he was the familiar face behind the barber chair in St. Mary's where he not only gave haircuts but also offered friendship, encouragement, and conversation to generations of customers. His barbershop was more than a business, it was a gathering place where lasting relationships were built. Following his retirement in 2016, he enjoyed spending time on his boat and fishing with friends. A long-standing member of St. Mary's First Baptist Church, Parnell served faithfully in many capacities through the years. Above all, Parnell was a devoted husband. He shared 71 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life. He was also a loving father to his two sons who were blessed by his guidance and support.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty; sons Dr. Jay (Brea) Crump of Bradenton, Florida, and Don (Karen) Crump of Valdosta, Georgia; sister, Helen Brantley; grandchildren Marisa Crump, Rachel Blakeney (Zachary), Mary Kate Yarber (Sean), Benjamin Crump, Camden Crump; and great- granddaughter, Audrey Eloise Crump.

Parnell was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers Kenneth and James Crump.

The family will receive friends at St. Mary's First Baptist Church at 10 AM on Monday, July 6, followed by the service at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Bristol Baptist Church Cemetery in Bristol, GA.

The family is deeply grateful to the many friends, neighbors, and devoted caregivers who looked after him with kindness and compassion throughout his lengthy illness.

Allison Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
