Michael Paul
Hebert
Mar 17, 1954 — Aug 8, 2026
Michael Paul Hebert, 72, of St. Marys, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on August 8, 2026.
Born on March 17, 1954, to Conrad and Jaqueline Hebert, Mike was born and raised in Somersworth, New Hampshire. He graduated from Somersworth High School in 1972, where his lifelong love of sports was already well established as a member of the varsity baseball team—including winning the state championship in 1970!
After high school, Mike joined the United States Army and served with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Yes, Mike willingly jumped out of perfectly good airplanes—which probably tells you something about the adventurous streak he carried throughout his life. After receiving an honorable discharge, he began his civil service career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1977. In 1989, his career brought him south when he transferred to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, where he continued working until his retirement.
Mike believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right—and doing well. Preferably on time. That philosophy showed in his work, in the way he approached life, and in what he expected from the people he loved.
Sports were always a big part of Mike’s life. When multiple sclerosis eventually took away his ability to run and play softball or baseball, Mike did what Mike tended to do: he found another way. Golf became his passion. He passed that passion along to his wife, Linda, and his son, Joseph into the game of golf. Many Saturdays were happily spent with the Men’s Association, enjoying the game and, just as importantly, the people around it.
Slowing down never came naturally to Mike. He was adventurous and almost always in a good mood. He rode a Harley, went hang-gliding on a whim when the others chickened out, and, well, we already mentioned the airplanes. Needless to say, he wasn’t particularly interested in letting MS tell him what he couldn’t do. But for all his adventures, some of Mike’s happiest times were the simple ones spent with the people he loved: riding around in golf carts, sharing potluck meals at Crooked River State Park, listening to music downtown by the river, playing golf, and simply spending time with family and friends. Mike had a way of making people feel happy and welcome. As a father, he was loving, supportive, encouraging, and always ready with just the right amount of advice. He worked hard, he played hard, he welcomed people in, and no matter what life put in front of him, Mike kept moving.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Hebert; his son, Joseph Hebert, his daughter-in-law, Sabrina. Step children, Lisa Wood and her husband, Mike, of St Marys, GA and Charlie Darby and his wife, Heather, of White Oak, Georgia. Grandchildren, Ashlee Thompson, and husband, Will; Amanda Wilson, and husband, Jonathan of St. Marys, GA, and Abigail and Elijah of Suwanee, Georgia. Great Grandchildren, Clark, Aria, and Cameron, all of St. Marys, Georgia. Mike is also survived by his brother, Dennis Hebert, and his wife, Tina, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his sister, Donna McGurren, of South Berwick, Maine; and his sister, Terry Chasse, and her husband, Charlie (also Mike’s lifelong friend), of Sanford, Maine; Sister in law, Sharon Larsen, of Colorado Springs, CO. Along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were made better by knowing him.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Jaqueline Hebert; his brother, Ricky Hebert; and his beloved Uncle Paul and Aunt Lorraine.
There are many ways to measure a life: years worked, accomplishments earned, places traveled, golf rounds played. Mike’s may be better measured by the people who were happy to see him coming—the family he loved, the friends he gathered, the laughs he shared, and the people he encouraged along the way.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 27, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Crooked River State Park shelter #1.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made in Mike’s memory to Crooked River State Park through Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites:
