John Ladd
Whalen
Mar 30, 1946 — Dec 18, 2024
John Ladd Whalen, originally from Battle Creek, Michigan, and later of St. Marys, Georgia, passed away on December 18, 2024, with his companion, Barbara A. Negles, by his side, he was 78 years old.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia M. Whalen of Park River, North Dakota, and his father, John A. Whalen of Battle Creek, Michigan.
John is survived by his son, Graham G. Whalen (Megan) of Barrington, Illinois; his grandchildren, Kelsey E. Whalen and Matthew T. Whalen; and his brother, James R. Whalen (Betsy) of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
John was an exceptional athlete, excelling in both baseball and football. After high school, he earned a full athletic scholarship to Michigan State University, where he played football under the legendary coach Duffy Daugherty. John was a proud member of the 1965–1966 Big Ten and
National Championship team. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Western Michigan University. John's passion for flying began in childhood, inspired by the model airplanes he hung from his bedroom ceiling. After graduating from MSU, he attended the United States Navy Officer Candidate School. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, where he flew the F-4 Phantom in the Pacific during the Vietnam War. John briefly flew corporate jets before joining the United States Air Force Reserves. During his time in the reserves, he supported numerous missions, notably during Operation Desert Shield/Storm and other global conflicts. John had a highly decorated career and retired from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel. Simultaneously, he built a distinguished career with American Airlines, retiring as a 777 Captain. He took immense pride in his safety record, often remarking that he never had a scrape of paint off the airline. In retirement, John continued to pursue his love of aviation, flying his twin-engine Beechcraft. He also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle alongside his son, daughter-in-law, and brother. Summers were often spent boating in Saugatuck, Michigan. After moving to St. Marys, Georgia, John enjoyed spending time with Barbara, traveling to Civil War sites, and playing golf at the naval base near his home. John will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He will be laid to rest with military honors on January 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association or Tunnel to Towers.
Allison Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
