Obituary

Chief Warrant Officer of the United States Navy, George Francis McCulley, Jr., 87, of
Kingsland, GA. passed peacefully at home on Sunday, June 22, 2025, surrounded by
his beloved bride of 64 years, Grace (Wood) McCulley, and his loving children Richard
and Maureen.

Born and raised Catholic in Clinton, MA. George was the oldest of Nine children to the
late George, Sr. and Dorothy (Gleason) McCulley. George served his country with
honor, distinction, and great sacrifice for twenty-two years. He earned the National
Defense Service Medal, Gallantry Cross for valor and heroic conduct, and the Vietnam
Service Medal with Four Bronze Stars for service in multiple Vietnam War campaigns
from 1964-1969.

CWO McCulley became a technical expert as engine and electrical officer aboard the
Gato Class Submarine the USS Rock SS274. His unit served as part of a historic
deployment of the first nuclear submarine in the Mediterranean aboard USS Shark
SS591. The USS Shark was also positioned strategically during the Cuban Missile
Crisis in October 1962. Advanced Naval training prepared his unit to board the nuclear-
powered attack submarine USS Plunger SS595 during the Vietnam War and the
Fletcher-class Destroyer USS Black DD666 during "Operation Market Time" in Vietnam.
He served aboard the USS Princeton LPH5 aircraft carrier involving several support
missions and including the rescue and recovery of NASA APOLLO 10 crew. His military
leadership and operational expertise served both deployments post-Vietnam aboard
USS Arcturus AF52 and USS Plymouth Rock LSD29.

After military-retirement in 1980, George and Gracie settled to an idyllic farm they
created in Beaverdam, VA. From vegetables to fresh eggs and a small stable of horses,
George's example served his family faithfully. Gracie's family leadership enabled
Richard to follow in his father's footsteps, serving in the Navy and Merchant Marines.
Maureen flourished by breeding and training horses. Then, started a business raising
the next generation of equestrians.

After many years in Virginia and a short stint in Ocala, FL George and Grace settled to
retirement in 2003 in Kingsland, GA. They enjoyed southern Georgia's warmth with golf
cart rides, scenic marsh views and birdwatching. George honed his craft as a master-
woodworker, builder of historic model ships and loved the game of Golf for the many life
lessons it revealed. His favorite southern, past time was enjoying exceptional cigars
while "grumpin in the garage."

George was pre-deceased by his brothers John, William and Paul. He leaves behind his
beautiful bride of 64 years, Grace (Wood) McCulley, his son Richard and Daughter
Maureen and her husband Brian Cawley. His sisters, Patricia McCulley, Mary Durning,
Anne Normandin, Nancy McCulley, as well as his brother Steven McCulley and his wife
MaryAnne.
