Edmund Nichalous
Marx, Jr
Apr 9, 1931 — Jun 12, 2023
EDMUND NICHALOUS MARX, JR., age 92, died June12, 2023 after a short illness at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was born April 9, 1931 in Ocean Falls, British Columbia to Edmund Nichalous Marx, Sr. and Frances Gorski Marx. Ed's father was a papermaker and truck farmer. The family also lived in Orange, Texas and Savannah, Georgia. Ed attended Catholic elementary schools and graduated from Savannah High School. In 1950, Ed and his brother Howard enlisted in the Marines to fight in the Korean War where both served as tank commanders. Their father was a hard taskmaster and they thought the Marines would be a nice change from working on the family farm and for their father at the paper mill. For his actions while serving as a tank commander in Company C, First Tank Battalion First Marine Division (Reinforced) against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from 24-27 July 1953 "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving" he was awarded the Silver Star medal. And, he was inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame for Valor in 2019. Ed achieved the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on August 1, 1954. On his discharge from the Marines, Ed obtained a position at the paper mill in Rome, Georgia. On a blind date, he met his true love Dovie "Ducky" Stansell, a Floyd County beauty. When he first saw Ducky, he told her he was going to marry her. She told him he was crazy. They eloped on August 27, 1955 to St. Marys, Georgia where Ed was to start work at Gilman Paper Company. Ed worked his way up through the ranks of the paper mill and was General Paper Mill Superintendent at the time of his retirement in 1993 from Gilman Paper Company. Also, from 1970 to 1971, Ed was the Mill Manager of Paterson Parchment Paper Company in Tullytown, Pennsylvania, before being begged to return to St. Marys by Gilman management. In 1992 he was named P.I.M.A 's "Paper Mill Superintendent of the Year", was President of Dixie Southeast P.I.M.A., and was a charter member of "Couch Pit University", the unofficial organization of longtime paper markers. During his career, Ed invented and patented several devices which are still used in the paper industry: the Sheraton Roll, which is utilized in the production of United States currency; and the Rotating Edge Profiler, used in paper mills across North America. These devices were marketed through XRAM, Inc., a family company. After his retirement from Gilman Paper Company, Ed served as a consultant in the paper industry and was the first instructor of the Pulp and Paper Program at Altamaha Technical Institute, Jesup, Georgia. Ed was a skilled woodworker and craftsman, and made many furniture pieces for family, friends, and his church Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, as well as the Historic Catholic Chapel in St. Marys, where he oversaw the restoration of the old Chapel. In November 2002, Ed and Ducky were awarded the Bishop Gartland Award by the Diocese of Savannah for their years of dedicated service to the Church.
Ed was a superb athlete having boxed Golden Glove in the Marines and an excellent swimmer, he served as a lifeguard while stationed in South Carolina. He was an avid runner for decades and in 1978 organized St. Marys' inaugural July 4th race, which is still run today. He lifted weights well into his late 80s.
Ed is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Frank, Howard, and Donnie. He is also predeceased by Baron, the best dog ever, and Liza Mae, the cat he didn't want but rocked to sleep every night.
He is survived by his wife Ducky, who he adored, son Gregg Marx (Kathy), daughter Madonna Marx (John Ossick), granddaughter Britton Marx, grandsons Nicholas Marx (Valerie), Zachary Marx (Angie), and great grandson Gabriel Marx. He is also survived by his sister Sharon Marx,
sisters-in-law June Stansell Smith and Charlie Stansell Ross, along with many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Allison Funeral Home, St. Marys on June 15, 2023 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A private graveside service with full military honors will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery for the immediate family with Father Gabriel Cummings officiating.
Pallbearers will be Gregg Marx, Nicholas Marx, Zachary Marx, Gabriel Marx, John Ossick, Delma Keene, and Matthew Barker.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's memory to the Humane Society of Camden County, Inc., Post Office Box 1270, Kingsland Georgia, 31548, www.humanecamden.org .
