Obituary

Darrell "Dean" Claassen, 77, of St. Marys, Georgia, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and went on to build a life marked by service, family, friendship, and laughter.

Dean proudly served his country for 30 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW04). His military career was defined by dedication, professionalism, and a deep loyalty to those he served alongside.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Carol, who passed in 2024, and by his daughter, Tamie, in 2008. Their memory remained at the center of his life, and he carried their love with him always.

A long-time resident of St. Marys, Georgia, Dean embraced the coastal community and all it offered. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who cherished time outdoors and delighted in telling stories about the "big ones that got away." He was also a proud member of the local Eagles Club, where he forged friendships, contributed to the community, and enjoyed the camaraderie of a place he called home.

Dean is survived by his son, Todd; Todd's wife, Noelle; and his treasured grandchildren, Hailey, Dean-Peter, and Abbigail Claassen. He was a loving and devoted grandfather who took great joy in their accomplishments, humor, and curiosity.

Dean was blessed with a lifelong best friend, Bill Cooksey, whose friendship spanned more than 55 years and was more like brotherhood. Bill's wife, Gerry, and their son, Ferrell, also held a special place in Dean's heart, and their families shared countless memories, stories, and moments of laughter through the decades.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice of the Golden Isles for their compassion, dignity, and care during Dean's final days.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Dean's life at Long Horn Steakhouse in Kingsland, Georgia, on December 20th, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., as they gather to honor his humor, kindness, strength, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
