Woodbine

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David "Dave" Van Gorder. Dave, who had recently been living in Woodbine, GA, passed away from health complications on December 7, 2025, at Southeast Georgia Hospital in Brunswick, Georgia, just two days after his 79th birthday.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on December 5, 1946, he spent most of his life in Florida. Dave grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida, whereby chance he met the love of his life, Melody Lea Osipov. They married on October 31, 1969, just three months after their memorable first encounter at a stoplight—a testament to Dave's determination and vibrant spirit. Dave brought this same passion for life into his career, which began in carpentry as a Foreman and Superintendent. He later became a Certified General Contractor in Florida. Known for always being active, Dave enjoyed building and repairing airboats, restoring classic cars, riding motorcycles, and constantly updating the homes where he and his family lived. Outside of work, he cherished time outdoors, fishing and hunting with friends and Melody. Later in life, he took up metal detecting with Melody along the beaches of Florida and Georgia. On February 12, 1975, Dave and Melody welcomed their daughter, Michelle Lea Van Gorder.
Family was central to Dave; he prioritized quality time, making every Sunday a family day filled with activities like bowling or strolling around town together. He was devoted to instilling strong family values, such as blessing meals, eating dinner together, and encouraging kindness.
In 1995, Dave and Melody moved from Florida to Jonesboro, Georgia, and later settled in Woodbine. Dave was celebrated for cherishing life's simple pleasures and ensuring his family always knew they were loved. Even in his last days at the hospital, he bravely reached out to hold Melody and Michelle's hands, leading them in a meaningful prayer that gave thanks for their life together. It was the first time his family had ever heard him pray aloud, and this special moment will be remembered by them forever.

Dave is survived by his wife of 56 years, Melody Lea Van Gorder, his daughter Michelle Lea Martin, Son-in-law Jon Paul Martin, grandchildren Evan Brian Plucker, Luke Walker Martin and Shae Briard Martin; and his brother Gregory Thomas Van Gorder.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lynn Ashton Van Gorder, and his mother, Wilma "Billie" Elaine Thomas.

A funeral service will be held on December 19, 2025, at 3pm at Allison Memorial Chapel, 10141 Colerain Rd., St. Marys, GA 31558.

Now free of the suffering that shapes us here. All those you thought you lost, now circle you and you are free of pain and heartbreak. Almighty God, we rejoice in your promise of love, joy and peace. In your mercy turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life, and the sorrow of parting into the joy of heaven, through our Savior Jesus Christ, who died, rose again and lives for evermore. Amen.

"I Made It Home":
I just wanted to let you know that I made it home.
Whatever that may mean for you,
Believe me when I say I am standing right beside you.
I haven't gone away; I am just on another plane.
I am safe, I am free, I am following the path God laid for me.
Please don't be sad, it was just my time.
I am happy, I am at peace,
You will understand when you get here.
You might not see or feel my touch or hear my voice, but I am near.
To laugh with you, to smile with you,
To cry with you again.
So, until then, please know that I made it home.

Rest in peace and love beautiful husband, father, family and friend.
